What Was the Accusation?
Actor Will Smith faced widespread criticism after walking onto the stage during the 94th Academy Awards on March 27, 2022, and slapping presenter Chris Rock across the face. Moments earlier, Rock had made a joke comparing Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, to the shaved-head appearance of Demi Moore’s character in the film G.I. Jane. Pinkett Smith had previously disclosed that she experienced hair loss caused by alopecia. After returning to his seat, Smith twice shouted a profanity-laced demand that Rock keep his wife’s name out of his mouth. The confrontation occurred during the live Oscars telecast and quickly became the dominant story of the ceremony.
Later that evening, Smith won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Richard Williams in King Richard. During his acceptance speech, Smith apologized to the Academy and his fellow nominees but did not directly apologize to Rock. The following day, Smith issued a written public apology to Rock, describing his conduct as unacceptable and acknowledging that he had been wrong. On April 1, Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and said he would accept additional consequences for his actions. The Academy subsequently barred him from attending Academy events, including the Oscars, for ten years.
Smith returned to the controversy in a July 29, 2022 video in which he directly apologized to Rock and members of Rock’s family, accepted responsibility for striking him, and rejected speculation that Pinkett Smith had instructed him to confront Rock. Smith also apologized to his own family, his fellow nominees, and musician and filmmaker Questlove, whose Best Documentary Feature victory immediately followed the altercation. The video represented Smith’s most extensive public attempt to repair the damage to his reputation after the incident.

Will Smith’s initial apology posted on his Instagram account the day after the slap:
“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.
I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.
I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us.
I am a work in progress.
