What was the Accusation?
Actor Ezra Miller faced sustained public scrutiny between 2020 and 2022 after a series of reported confrontations, arrests, criminal charges, protective-order proceedings, and other allegations of troubling conduct. Miller, who uses they/them pronouns, was widely known for portraying Barry Allen/The Flash in DC films and appearing in the Fantastic Beasts franchise. The controversies involved several separate incidents with differing legal outcomes, including criminal charges, dismissed proceedings, and disputed allegations that were never adjudicated.
One of the earliest incidents occurred in Reykjavík, Iceland, in April 2020, when a video circulated that appeared to show Miller grabbing a woman by the neck and forcing her toward the ground outside Prikið Kaffihús. Police later said they had not been called to the scene, no injuries had been reported to them, and no one had been arrested.
The controversy intensified in Hawaiʻi in March 2022. According to police, Miller became agitated at a Hilo karaoke bar, yelled obscenities, grabbed a microphone from a woman who was singing, and lunged at a man playing darts. Miller was arrested for disorderly conduct and harassment, later pleaded no contest to disorderly conduct, and was fined $500; the harassment charge was dismissed. Around the same time, a Hawaiʻi couple obtained a temporary restraining order after alleging threatening behavior and theft of personal property. The couple later asked that the petition be dismissed.
Miller was arrested again in April after police said they allegedly threw a chair at a private residence, striking a woman in the forehead. They were arrested for second-degree assault and later released.
Additional allegations emerged in June 2022. The parents of activist Tokata Iron Eyes sought a protective order, alleging that Miller had manipulated and endangered Tokata. Tokata, then 18, rejected those claims and publicly defended Miller. In 2024, Chase Iron Eyes said the original grooming allegation relied on information from a witness who later recanted and that he had withdrawn the court filings. Also in June, a Massachusetts mother obtained a temporary harassment-prevention order on behalf of her 12-year-old child after alleging threatening and inappropriate conduct. Miller denied the accusations. No criminal charges were filed, and the order was lifted in 2023.
In Vermont, Miller was accused of entering a residence and taking bottles of alcohol. They later pleaded guilty to unlawful trespass after more serious charges were dropped.
Against this accumulation of legal problems, disputed allegations, and damaging publicity, Miller issued a public statement in August 2022. They apologized to people they had alarmed or upset, said they had begun treatment for complex mental-health issues, and committed themselves to working toward a healthier and safer life.
