What was the Accusation?
Travis Scott faced intense public scrutiny after a crowd crush at the Astroworld Festival in Houston on November 5, 2021, killed ten people and injured many others. Critics argued that the concert should have been stopped earlier as fans struggled in the crowd and emergency responders attempted to reach injured attendees. Scott was accused of helping create a performance culture that encouraged chaotic crowd behavior and of failing to recognize or respond to the severity of the emergency from the stage. Lawsuits were filed against Scott, Live Nation, ScoreMore, and other organizers, alleging negligence, inadequate crowd-control planning, and poor emergency coordination. Scott released a short video statement the day after the event in which he said he was devastated, sent prayers to those who died, emphasized that his fans meant the world to him, and said he would work with Houston authorities and help families. The image-repair problem was especially difficult because his statement expressed grief while also suggesting that he did not understand the seriousness of what was happening during the performance.
