News broke in March of 2016, that Hillary Clinton had used personal email rather than a special government email during her service as Barack Obama’s Secretary of State. At the request of the State Department, partly in connection to another investigation into the Benghazi disaster in Libya, Clinton’s lawyer’s turned over 55,000 pages of emails. However, she didn’t turn over the server housing these emails until much later and after using a software called BleachBit to wipe the servers clean. When asked by reporters about whether she knowingly wiped the server, she joked “What? Like with a cloth or something. I don’t know how it works digitally at all.” She would also emphatically deny that she sent anything classified over her personal email. The publicity from the event was certainly a threat to her candidacy as Donald Trump used it as a frequent talking point in Tweets. In one, he argued: 150 Clinton E-mails still contain classified information. More sensitive when she was Sec.of State. This is a very big deal.”
