What was the Accusation?

Washington Nationals pitcher Cade Cavalli was accused of using racially charged language toward Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras during a June 30, 2026, game at Fenway Park. After striking out Contreras looking in the fourth inning, Cavalli shouted “Sit down, boy!” at him. The phrase drew immediate criticism because the word “boy,” when directed by a white speaker toward a person of color, has a long racist history in the United States. Contreras, who is Venezuelan, did not directly accuse Cavalli of racism after the game, but said he would let Major League Baseball handle the matter. The exchange escalated quickly. Contreras confronted Cavalli, benches cleared, and Contreras attempted to throw his helmet toward the pitcher before players separated them. Contreras, Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy, Red Sox outfielder Nate Eaton, and Nationals pitcher Miles Mikolas were ejected, though Cavalli remained in the game. The next day, Cavalli apologized publicly, saying he had not intended racial harm and had learned from the reaction to his words. MLB later suspended Cavalli and Contreras seven games each, with Mikolas and Eaton also receiving suspensions.

I’m extremely torn up about the way that things were perceived. Obviously, there was no ill intention behind that. My teammates know me, my family knows me, this organization knows me. I couldn’t sleep because of it. It hurt my heart knowing if there’s a 13-year-old Black kid in D.C. that sees that, that looked up to me and thinks that, he perceived it in a way that wasn’t intended the way that it came out, and then he’s not looking up to me anymore, that hurts my heart.
