What was the accusation?
In December 2015, U.S. Soccer executives abruptly cancelled the U.S. women’s national soccer team exhibition game (set to take place at Aloha Stadium in Hawaii) due to “unsafe turf conditions” previously unknown to officials. Days later, a New York Times article reported that U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati had issued an apology to the women’s soccer team (as well as to fans and support staff) for the federation’s failure to properly vet the field conditions in advance. “We had series of mistakes involving this game,” Gulati said. “We screwed up.
