What was the Accusation?

In July and August 2025, American Eagle faced backlash over its fall denim campaign starring actor Sydney Sweeney. The campaign used the slogan “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” with several ads playing on the similarity between “jeans” and “genes.” Critics argued that the campaign’s language and visuals were racially insensitive because the ads featured a blonde, blue-eyed white celebrity while using language about inherited traits, including hair color and eye color. Some viewers read the wordplay as echoing ideas associated with eugenics or white beauty standards, while others criticized the campaign as overly sexualized or tone-deaf. American Eagle did not issue a conventional apology. Instead, the company used image repair by defending and reframing the campaign, stating on Instagram that the ad was always about denim rather than genetics or racial meaning. Supporters of the campaign argued that the backlash was exaggerated, while critics said the company’s response failed to meaningfully address why the ad language bothered viewers. The controversy grew beyond advertising circles when political commentators and public figures weighed in, turning a denim campaign into a broader debate over race, marketing, celebrity, and “cancel culture.”

Sydney Sweeney Statements:

“Anyone who knows me knows that I’m always trying to bring people together. I’m against hate and divisiveness,” the two-time Emmy nominee continued. “In the past my stance has been to never respond to negative or positive press but recently I have come to realize that my silence regarding this issue has only widened the divide, not closed it. So I hope this new year brings more focus on what connects us instead of what divides us.”

“I did a jean ad. I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I’m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life.”

“I knew at the end of the day what that ad was for, and it was great jeans, it didn’t affect me one way or the other. I’ve always believed that I’m not here to tell people what to think … when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear.”
