What Was the Accusation?
Actor Haley Joel Osment faced criticism in April 2025 after police body-camera footage from his arrest at Mammoth Mountain ski resort in California showed him directing antisemitic language at a law-enforcement officer. Mammoth Lakes police arrested Osment on April 8 after responding to a report involving an allegedly intoxicated person at the resort. The Mono County District Attorney subsequently charged him with two misdemeanors: disorderly conduct while under the influence of alcohol in public and possession of cocaine. The district attorney emphasized that the criminal charges were allegations that would have to be proven in court.
Footage of the encounter showed an agitated Osment being detained and later transported in a patrol vehicle. During the incident, he referred to an officer as a Nazi and used an antisemitic slur. After the footage became public, Osment issued a statement saying that he was horrified by his conduct. He said he had been experiencing a low emotional period following months of loss and displacement, including the destruction of his home in the January 2025 Eaton Fire, and described himself as having been in a blackout during the arrest. He nevertheless explicitly rejected those circumstances as an excuse for the offensive language and apologized to people hurt by his words, particularly members of the Jewish community.
Osment also promised to atone for his conduct. In June 2025, a judge granted him a one-year diversion program over the objection of the Mono County District Attorney. The program required him to attend at least three Alcoholics Anonymous meetings per week and meet with his therapist at least twice weekly for six months, as well as obey all laws. The charges were eligible for dismissal upon successful completion of the diversion program.

“I’m absolutely horrified by my behavior. Had I known I used this disgraceful language in the throes of a blackout, I would have spoken up sooner. The past few months of loss and displacement have broken me down to a very low emotional place. But that’s no excuse for using this disgusting word. From the bottom of my heart, I apologize to absolutely everyone that this hurts. What came out of my mouth was nonsensical garbage — I’ve let the Jewish community down and it devastates me. I don’t ask for anyone’s forgiveness, but I promise to atone for my terrible mistake.”
