What Was the Accusation?
Longtime Wheel of Fortune announcer Jim Thornton faced public scrutiny in September 2026 after photographs surfaced from a May 14 American Airlines flight from Charlotte to Los Angeles that appeared to show him using an online chatroom intended for people experiencing pedophilic thoughts. A nearby passenger photographed Thornton’s laptop and reported the activity to the flight crew. American Airlines confirmed that Flight 1276 was met by law enforcement after landing at Los Angeles International Airport. Thornton was questioned but was not arrested or charged with a crime.
Thornton, through attorney Allison Hart, denied wrongdoing. Hart said Thornton had become involved in suicide-prevention advocacy after a close family member died by suicide and had visited online crisis forums to support people experiencing suicidal ideation. According to Hart, an acquaintance in that community directed Thornton to lifeline.chat, which he believed was another suicide-prevention resource similar to 988lifeline.org. Hart said Thornton left after understanding the site’s purpose and maintained that he had never viewed, downloaded, or consumed child pornography. News reports, however, noted that timestamps in photographs published by TMZ appeared to show the site open for approximately 57 minutes, complicating the defense that he left promptly after recognizing its nature.
Sony Pictures Television suspended Thornton on September 1 while it investigated the allegations and began recasting his announcing role. After the photographs and additional reporting became public, Sony announced on September 4 that, following its investigation, Thornton’s employment with Wheel of Fortune had been terminated effective immediately. The controversy therefore involved an allegation of disturbing online conduct and a reputational crisis rather than a criminal conviction: as of September 6, Thornton had not been arrested or charged in connection with the flight incident, and his public defense had been delivered through counsel.

Regarding the May flight incident, Hart said Thornton “did not engage in any illegal conduct, was not arrested and has not been charged with any crime.” She said law enforcement spoke with him for “five minutes or less” and then told him he was free to leave.
Hart later said Thornton had “become active in suicide-prevention advocacy” after losing a close family member to suicide and had spent time in online forums supporting people experiencing suicidal ideation. She said an acquaintance in the suicide-prevention community directed him to lifeline.chat, which Thornton understood to be a suicide-prevention forum similar to resources operated by the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Hart said that when Thornton understood what the website was about, “he left the page and has not visited since.” She also maintained that the website itself was not unlawful and that Thornton had never viewed, downloaded, or consumed child pornography.
