R&B singer R. Kelly faced renewed allegations of abusive and controlling behavior in July 2017 after journalist Jim DeRogatis published an investigation describing what parents and former members of Kelly’s inner circle characterized as a “cult.” The report alleged that several young women were living at properties associated with Kelly in the Chicago and Atlanta areas and that Kelly exercised extensive control over their daily lives. Former associates Cheryl Mack, Kitti Jones, and Asante McGee alleged that women living with Kelly had to ask permission before leaving, were restricted in their communications, and were subjected to rules governing such matters as clothing, food, sleep, bathing, and sexual activity. The report also alleged that Kelly confiscated personal cellphones and recorded sexual encounters.
Parents of some of the women said they were trying to reestablish contact with their daughters and alleged that Kelly had manipulated or “brainwashed” them. The allegations attracted substantial attention because of Kelly’s previous history of sexual-misconduct accusations. He had been prosecuted on child-pornography charges in Illinois and acquitted in 2008. The July 2017 claims, however, remained allegations at the time and did not themselves result in criminal charges. Authorities had conducted welfare checks involving women associated with Kelly, and reports indicated that the women told police they were not being held against their will.
One of the women at the center of the 2017 controversy, Joycelyn Savage, publicly disputed her family’s characterization of her circumstances. Savage told TMZ that she was happy and denied that she had been brainwashed or was being held captive. She nevertheless declined to reveal her location or fully describe her relationship with Kelly. Her father, Timothy Savage, continued to maintain that his daughter was being controlled. Kelly responded to the broader accusations through his attorney, Linda Mensch, who said that he unequivocally denied them and intended to clear his name. The response was therefore not an admission or apology but an image-repair statement centered on categorical denial and opposition to the accusers’ claims.
Later criminal proceedings provide significant historical context but should not be conflated with the precise allegations reported in July 2017. In 2021, a federal jury in New York convicted Kelly of racketeering and Mann Act violations following a trial involving evidence of sexual exploitation, coercion, and abuse. He was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison in 2022. A separate federal jury in Chicago subsequently convicted him on three counts of producing child pornography and three counts of enticing a minor to engage in sexual activity. Those later convictions established criminal conduct presented in those prosecutions, but they do not mean that every individual allegation contained in the original 2017 “cult” reporting was separately adjudicated or proven in court.
