What was the Accusation?
Ivan Danailov Dimitrov, a Bulgarian-born man living in the United Kingdom, faced international criticism in June 2023 after he was filmed carving his name and that of his girlfriend into a wall inside Rome’s Colosseum. During a visit to the landmark, Dimitrov used an object reported to be a key to scratch “Ivan + Hayley 23” into the structure. Another tourist recorded the act and posted the footage online, where it circulated widely. In the video, Dimitrov could be seen turning toward the camera and smiling after making the inscription. Italian Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano publicly condemned the vandalism as a serious act of incivility, and Italian authorities began working to identify the tourist.
Police subsequently identified Dimitrov, and he became the subject of an investigation concerning damage to cultural heritage. The controversy was particularly significant because the Colosseum is one of Rome’s best-known historic landmarks and forms part of the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre of Rome. Although news reports noted that the particular wall damaged by Dimitrov was associated with a nineteenth-century restoration rather than the original Roman construction, the carving nevertheless occurred within the protected monument. The Colosseum itself was constructed during the Flavian period and was inaugurated under Emperor Titus in A.D. 80.
After being identified, Dimitrov expressed remorse to Italian authorities and sent a written apology addressed to Rome’s prosecutor, Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, and the city of Rome. He acknowledged the seriousness of his conduct and apologized to Italians and people around the world for damaging something he described as belonging to all humanity. His explanation, however, generated another round of international attention when he said that he had learned of the monument’s antiquity only after the incident. In addition to apologizing, Dimitrov characterized his conduct as frivolous and uncivil and indicated that he wanted to make amends. His assertion that he had not understood how ancient the Colosseum was became one of the most widely reported elements of the apology.
